UNDERSTANDING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The immune system is the body’s defense against infectious organisms and invaders. It is made up of a network of many cells with different functions that work together to prevent disease. The immune system includes:

  • Messengers, which send messages between different types of cells
  • Fighters, which kill other cells
  • Regulators, which turn other cells on or off
  • And many more

One of the most important types of immune cell is the T cell. Different types of T cells can serve as messengers, fighters, and regulators.
